Abaco offers a combination of world-class surfing, drop in on a rail-grabbing bottom turn or the comfortable, less challenging, soft shoulder drops at many beginner-friendly spots. The crystal clear water with no crowded lineup of surfers waiting to catch a wave provides endless fun for everyone. Whether you’ve just picked up surfing or you’ve been surfing for years, there is place for you here. On a day when the waves subside and the water is calm, pick up a paddleboard and experience a day filled with recreation as well as fitness. Think of Schooner Bay as the jewel in the crown of South Abaco’s waters.

Sailing offers the chance to get out on the water and explore the rich diversity of the islands. Abaco hosts its fair share of regattas, but two in particular stand out. The annual Five Towns Regatta Time stretches from the American to the Bahamian Independence Day celebrations. Sailing sloops, many from the States, bring enthusiasts to Abaco for this fun-filled and exciting racing series. The competition starts in Green Turtle Cay and finishes in Marsh Harbour eight days later. Expect parties all along the way!
Yet closer to home, the 2014 E-Class sailing invitational takes place in the village of Schooner Bay. This competitive, friendly and fun weekend not only highlights Abaco’s rich sailing tradition, but also shows off the craft of sculling, Bahamian music and many native dishes. The event is sponsored by Bahamian Brewery and Sands Beer.
